Exercise is well known for its positive effects on mental health. But that doesn’t mean athletes are immune to depression and anxiety. Data from the American College of Sports Medicine indicates that 35% of elite athletes suffer from eating disorders, burnout, depression or anxiety.

Professional athletes, bodybuilders, those who share the world stage are a great source of inspiration. At the same time, they are human beings. In the world of elite athletes and professional sports, there is enormous pressure to compete and perform at the highest level. Depression, stress, anxiety, fear of failure can set in at any time. Follow the protocols necessary to take care of your mental health. Doing these few things will impact your mood, the way you think and feel. Adopt the holistic and functional medicine approach, prevention and identify what may be causing the problems.
- Healthy eating. Food is medicine.
- Proper nutrition, hydration, vitamins, supplementation, nootropics.
- Avoid overtraining. Burnout.
- Practice meditation, visualization and deep breathing.
- Surround yourself with positive people.
- Read, watch, listen to things that will motivate and inspire i.e. books, videos, internet, YouTube, articles.
- Recovery.
- Rest/Sleep.
- Limit the time spent on the internet and social networks
- Do things you love. Take a hike, go for a walk.
- Blood test. Have your blood tests checked at least twice a year. Know what’s going on inside. Identify immediate needs and gaps.
- Avoid alcohol and drugs.
- Speak up if you have symptoms of depression, mood swings, irritability, anxiety or stress. Find a qualified trainer or sports psychologist.
