Chakrasana, also known as Urdva Dhanurasana, is a backbend yoga asana that strengthens the back and increases flexibility in the spine. The word ‘chakra’, which means ‘wheel’, and ‘asana’, which means ‘posture’, came together to form the name.

Chakrasana yoga is beneficial for all parts of the body and should be practiced by everyone. This asana is for:

  1. Stress and tension are reduced.
  2. Increases flexibility in the spine while strengthening the back.
  3. Muscles in the arms, shoulders, legs and abdomen all need to be strengthened.

  • Lie completely on your back with your feet apart, bend your knees a little, and place your feet firmly on the floor close to your body.
  • Now try to bring your palms behind your shoulders so that your fingers are pointing towards your shoulders and your elbows are shoulder-width apart.
  • Inhale and press the palms firmly to the floor.
  • Now lift your shoulders and elbow firmly off the floor
  • So that your feet are firmly planted on the ground.
  • Now inhale and lift your hips into the air.
  • Your spine should be rolled up to resemble a semi-circular wheel.
  • Now try to straighten your legs and arms as much as possible so that your hips and chest are pressed against the floor.
  • Try to hold this pose for at least 30 seconds.
  • Now try to return to the initial position, try to bend the elbows to lower the head and shoulders directly to the floor
  • Finally, properly bend your knees and try to bring your spine and hips back to the ground to relax.

Types of chakrasana

To do the other types of modified versions of yoga asana Chakrasana, what you need to do is support your hands or feet on some yoga blocks. Make sure these blocks are properly braced against the wall.

Suppose you want to increase the level of your Chakrasana which is trying to make it harder. In this case, the following yoga asanas make its natural progression much more exciting and effective:

  • Ekapada Chakrasana: This is also known as Single Leg Wheel Pose, so it is done by lifting your leg off the floor. The significance of this Chakrasana pose using only one leg is helpful in improving your balance and bodyweight strength.
  • Eka Hasta Chakrasana: Also known as One-Armed Chakrasana or One-Handed Chakrasana, in this variation of this yoga asana, Chakrasana, you must raise your hand and place it either on your chest or on your opposite shoulder. This variation should only be done by people who have a high level of flexibility.

When is the best time to do Chakrasana?

This yoga asana known as chakrasana is the best to prove your flexibility or health for one who does this asana regularly.

It is always suggested by many yoga experts that this asana should be practiced for about four to six hours after meals. The reason is that chakrasana requires a lot of flexibility and energy which can be derived from digested food and provides energy to our body. Sunrise yoga workouts are generally advocated by many yoga experts, but if this is not possible for you, you can also practice this asana in the evening.

Contraindications Chakrasana

Although the chakrasana offers many benefits to people who practice it regularly, there are several precautions that should be of great concern.

  1. Do not attempt this chakrasana yoga pose in case you have a back injury.
  2. If you have heart problems, you shouldn’t do this.
  3. If you have headaches, diarrhea and a syndrome called carpal tunnel syndrome.
  4. Anyone with high blood pressure or low blood pressure.
  5. Do not perform this chakrasana pose if you suffer from heart or spinal problems.
  6. Avoid practicing chakras if you suffer from a hernia.
