The original GM diet plan was developed by General Motors, with help from the Food and Drug Administration and the United States Department of Agriculture, in 1985 for its employees. The idea was to improve the health of these employees and, in doing so, improve the productivity of the workforce.

The initial results were impressive and the workers experienced significant weight loss in just one week, which showed improved efficiency, energy and confidence.

While the GM diet for weight loss has been considered a success and is considered easy to follow, most nutritionists do not recommend you follow it. Although it results in immediate weight loss, the diet also has several side effects which we will discuss later in the article.

At HealthifyMe, we believe in aiming to follow a balanced diet that would ensure weight loss while helping the body absorb the nutrients it needs. If you are looking for a diet chart to help you lose weight and stay healthy, we suggest you take a look at the best Indians. Diet for weight loss.

Indian Version 7 Day GM Diet Weight Loss Plan Chart

The Indian version of the GM diet would not change much from the original version. But, while the original GM diet allows the consumption of meat in the form of beef, this will be replaced in India by vegetarian alternatives, as a significant portion of the population does not consume beef.

While non-vegetarians can still eat protein in the form of chicken on Days 5 and 6, vegetarians can substitute the meat for a cup of brown rice.

GM Diet Chart – Day 1

fruit slices

Start the diet by consuming as much fruit as you want from day one as there are no specific instructions on how much and when to eat it. However, watermelons and muskmelons are highly recommended as they contain high amounts of fiber. You can also include apples, oranges, and papaya in your diet.

Another important part of the diet would be to consume 8 to 12 glasses of water in the day and avoid starvation at any time of the day. If you feel hungry at any time, feel free to eat fruits and satisfy your hunger.

These high-fiber, low-fat foods keep an individual full longer, thereby reducing an individual’s calorie intake. The high intake of water will also serve to flush out toxins from the body and prepare it for the rest of the diet.

On the first day, completely avoid all types of vegetables and limit yourself to fruit consumption. Among fruits, it is ideal to stay away from bananas. The first day should feel a bit easier as the monotony of the food wouldn’t have started yet. So stick to the plan and feel active and energized for the rest of the day.

Time Meal
8:00 a.m. 1 medium apple

A few plums or an orange

10:30 a.m. ½ bowl of sliced muskmelon
12:30 p.m. 1 bowl of watermelon
4:00 p.m. 1 large orange or mosambi
6:30 p.m. 1 cup muskmelon and pomegranate salad
8:30 p.m. ½ cup of watermelon

GM Diet Chart – Day 2

Unlike the first day, the second day of the GM diet consists of eating only vegetables. These vegetables can be eaten raw or can be cooked to make them appetizing. Also make sure that there is no oil involved in their preparation.

If you choose to eat potatoes, avoid choosing unhealthy options like fries or even a packet of your favorite brand of crisps, although you can snack on vegetables any time of the day if you feel hungry. If absolutely necessary, olive oil or butter can be used sparingly for flavor.

Vegetables contain all the nutrients you need to support the body. You get the necessary carbs from potatoes, protein from peas, and carrots and beans are packed with fiber and all the essential vitamins. After a relatively low-carb first day, this will help restore your body’s carbohydrate content and additionally provide you with enough energy to sustain the diet. According to the plan, you must completely avoid fruit on day 2.

Time Meal
8:00 a.m. 1 cup boiled potatoes
10:30 a.m. ½ bowl of cucumber
12:30 p.m. 1 cup lettuce, spinach, cucumber and bell pepper
4:00 p.m. ½ cup of sliced carrots and a glass of lemon juice with a pinch of salt
6:30 p.m. 1 cup boiled broccoli and green peas
8:30 p.m. 1 cucumber

GM Diet Chart – Day 3

On the third day of the diet, stick to eating a combination of fruits and vegetables. These foods could be the same as those eaten on the first two days. However, the only foods to avoid are potatoes and bananas.

By the middle of the week, your body would have started adjusting to the new diet. After a day of eating only vegetables, fruits would be a welcome addition as the combination of fruits and vegetables also provides the body with the benefits of high fiber and protein content.

You would also need to include 8 to 12 glasses of water in order to flush out all the toxins from the body. Besides replenishing your body and giving it all the nutrients it needs, you can also add the GM Diet Soup to your diet on the third day. This change will also satisfy your taste buds and break the monotony of the first two days.

Time Meal
8:00 a.m. ½ bowl of muskmelon
10:30 a.m. 1 cup pineapple or pear
12:30 p.m. 1 cup lettuce, spinach, cucumber and bell pepper
4:00 p.m. ½ cup of sliced carrots and a glass of lemon juice with a pinch of salt
6:30 p.m. 1 cup boiled broccoli and green peas
8:30 p.m. 1 cucumber

GM Diet Chart – Day 4

bananas for gm diet day 4

The bananas that were avoided on the first three days can finally be eaten on the fourth day and one should consume 8 bananas during the day. Consumption can be spread over meal and snack times of the day. In addition to this, one should also consume a large glass of milk each, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In case it gets monotonous, a bowl of soup can also be included in the diet.

Bananas are rich in pectin and hence they aid in digestion. They also provide his body with the instant energy it needs to keep going. Along with other nutrients, they are also high in potassium and low in salt. In addition, the milk that one consumes on this day is also an excellent source of potassium and calcium. Thanks to its vitamin D enrichment, milk also helps to strengthen the bones.

On day 4, it is absolutely necessary to avoid snacking on fruits other than bananas. Although you can also replace bananas and milk with fig and soy milk. Potatoes and sweet potatoes should also be skipped.

Time Meal
8:00 a.m. 2 bananas
10:30 a.m. 1 banana
12:30 p.m. Milkshake (2 bananas + 1 glass of milk + a dash of cocoa powder)
4:00 p.m. 2 bananas
6:30 p.m. 1 banana

1 glass of milk

8:30 p.m. 1 glass of milk

GM Diet Chart – Day 5

On Day 5, vegetarians can choose to eat a bowl of brown rice, while non-vegetarians can eat a lean protein source like fish or chicken breast. In addition to this, you also need to eat 6 large tomatoes.

While vegetarians can eat a bowl of brown rice for lunch, you should be careful to use minimal oil for cooking, non-vegetarians can eat around 500g of baked or lightly fried skinless chicken, as well than the 6 tomatoes. You can combat the large amounts of uric acid produced by your body by drinking up to 15 glasses of water a day.

Brown rice is high in fiber and aids in digestion. At the same time, chicken and fish are great sources of lean protein. Additionally, fish also contains omega-3 fatty acids and the high fiber content of tomatoes means they aid digestion as well.

It should be noted, it is important to avoid potatoes and sweet potatoes among the vegetables, and bananas among the fruits that were recommended earlier in the week. You can also have a bowl of GM diet soup as part of the mid-morning or evening snack.

Time Meal
09:00 3 tomatoes
12:30 p.m. ½ cup brown rice

Stir-fried assorted vegetables

4:00 p.m. 2 tomatoes
6:30 p.m. 1 bowl of brown rice

1 tomato

½ cup sautéed vegetables

GM Diet Chart – Day 6

Day 6 of the GM diet requires the individual to have cooked or uncooked vegetables. As suggested earlier, vegetarians can opt for a cup of brown rice, while non-vegetarians can include a lean protein source like fish or chicken breast in their diet.

Another day of relatively high food intake, day six also follows a similar pattern to the previous day with the addition of cooked or uncooked vegetables. Make sure vegetables are boiled and not fried and salads should not have heavy dressing either.

Non-vegetarians can eat up to 500g of skinless chicken with vegetables apart from tomatoes and potatoes. In addition to the food from the day before, the vegetable mix from day 6 also provides the necessary fiber for the body. Ideally, all fruits should be avoided as well as potatoes and sweet potatoes.

It’s great to see the results after such a tough diet that on day six the weight loss progress will now be visible.

Time Meal
09:00 1 glass of carrot juice
12:30 p.m. ½ cup brown rice + ½ cup vegetables
4:00 p.m. 1 cup cucumber slices
6:30 p.m. ½ bowl of brown rice

½ cup vegetables, chicken/Cottage cheese

GM Diet Chart – Day 7

On the last day of the 7 day plan, one would eat a cup of brown rice, an assortment of vegetables and fruit juice. One can eat a cup of brown rice with a bowl of boiled vegetables for lunch. As for hydration, drink a glass of sugar-free fruit juice after each meal or snack to supplement nutrient-rich vegetables.

Rice and vegetables will provide the body with much needed energy for the body to function efficiently and fruit juices will help flush toxins from the system.

As with the previous 6 days, certain foods should also be avoided on the seventh day. It is advisable to stay away from vegetables like potatoes and sweet potatoes, while fruits like banana, cherry, mango and pear are also to be avoided.

Time Meal
09:00 1 glass of orange/apple juice
12:30 p.m. ½ cup brown rice

½ cup sautéed vegetables

4:00 p.m. 1 cup watermelon/a few assorted berries
6:30 p.m. 1 bowl of GM soup

  3. It takes about 60 minutes for the soup to be cooked. Vegetables should be boiled and simmered. Then, season the soup with salt and pepper and enjoy a bowl of delicious soup.

GM Diet Side Effects

The GM diet is popular all over the world. However, they have several side effects that should be considered before choosing to follow the diet.

    • Although the diet can help you lose weight fast, it is high in fiber but low in protein, carbohydrates and fats. Because of this, your body may not be getting essential nutrients.
    • The GM diet can cause a metabolic slowdown in your body. Although your weight loss process would not be affected initially, it would eventually make it difficult to maintain your body weight.
    • The body would use all the fluids from the diet for metabolism. The diet could therefore cause you to feel dehydrated.
    • Other possible side effects of the GM diet also include weakness, headaches, and feeling hungry.

Expert Review

The GM diet is an emergency diet that goes against the principles of a balanced diet. Although the weight loss or results are quite quick and obvious, the long term effects are more damaging.

Since you undergo a drastic change in your regular eating routine, the body loses weight and when you resume your normal diet, you gain as much or more weight than it lost.

Any diet that forces you to stop eating your daily staple foods is believed to be unsustainable. Weight management requires consistent good eating habits and a balanced diet with all nutrients.

Avoid following an unrealistic diet that requires extra effort to completely change your lifestyle and make the same effort to balance your daily meals. This will help maintain a good lifestyle change and ensure sustainable weight management.

Summary

By focusing on consuming complex carbohydrates and low-calorie foods, the GM diet almost guarantees weight loss. However, following the GM diet could prevent an individual from getting the nutrients they need. On top of that, it could also make it difficult to maintain your body weight after the diet has helped you lose weight.
